By Train
Durham is well-connected to the National Rail network, with most Intercity East Coast mainline trains stopping at the station.
- London: Direct trains from London King's Cross take approximately 3 hours, offering straightforward connections to the Eurostar for European travellers.
- Scotland: Edinburgh is roughly 1 hour 45 minutes away by train.
By Air
For international and domestic flights, there are a few primary options for reaching Durham:
- Newcastle International Airport (NCL): The closest airport. It takes about 50 minutes to reach Durham via the Metro (to Newcastle Central Station) and a connecting train. Alternatively, a taxi takes roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
- Edinburgh Airport (EDI): Approximately 3 hours away by tram and train.
- London Airports (LHR, LGW, STN): Attendees can connect via the London Underground to King's Cross station and take the mainline train north.
- Manchester Airport (MAN): Approximately 3 hours away by direct train.
By Car
Durham is roughly 30 minutes south of Newcastle upon Tyne. Drivers should take the A1(M) and leave at the Durham exit (Junction 62). Please note city-centre parking is restricted. We advise attendees travelling by car to use the Park and Ride services or check if their accommodation provides a parking space.
How to get to the Ogden centre
The Ogden Centre for Fundamental Physics is located adjacent to the main Physics Department building on the University Lower Mountjoy Science Site (South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE). Please see here Google maps
Walking: The Department is a 20- to 25-minute walk from Durham Railway Station.
Taxi: Taxis are readily available outside the railway station. The journey takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
A limited number of en-suite rooms are available at
John Snow College and can be booked as part of the registration process at a rate of £382.50 for B&B.
Rooms are available for stays from Monday 14 September to Thursday 17 September and must be booked by 17 August 2026, subject to availability.
If you prefer to make your own arrangements, or if college rooms are unavailable, Durham offers a wide selection of hotels to suit various budgets. Here are several popular options, ordered roughly from most to least expensive:
- Hotel Indigo: A boutique hotel set in the historic Old Shire Hall. (~15-minute walk to the Ogden Centre)
- Marriott Hotel Royal County Located right on the river with excellent city views. (~15-minute walk)
- Radisson Blu Situated on the riverside, offering modern rooms and a short walk to the railway station. (~25-minute walk)
- Premier Inn A reliable mid-range option located slightly further out. (~20-minute walk)
- Travelodge A b9udget-friendly, "cheap and cheerful" option. Please note that Wi-Fi is often charged at an extra premium and the breakfast is basic. (~25-minute walk)
Durham is a very walkable city, the suggested hotels above are mostly within walking distance of the conference venue.
